At last week’s 67th annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, Daniel Cox, director of the Public Religion Research Institute, presented a paper on American attitudes toward religious minorities in 2012:
Observing that Americans’ perspectives on Mormons, Muslims, and their faith have been a prominent feature of the political debate over the past year, Mr. Cox explored questions about whether white evangelical Protestants, a crucial part of the Republican constituency, will support a candidate whose religion they view as being different from their own. Turning next to Americans’ attitudes toward Muslims, Mr. Cox outlined some of the challenges facing American Muslims in gaining widespread public acceptance in society. He also examined the degree to which Americans are comfortable with certain aspects of Muslim culture and religious expression (i.e. wearing a burqa).
