The force of Professor Appadurai's argument concerning the President's use of faith in capitalism is no greater than the factual basis upon which it rests. He refers to the President's most recent statement, but does not give the date, offer a proper citation, or quote from it. All we know is that the President made a most recent statement in the last week. This means that we have no reference point from which to begin. Joe Clement refers to Adorno. I would point to Habermas and his demands for communicative ethics and ask for an full explanation of the basis for the core argument that the President is calling upon us to have a faith in capitalism akin to religious faith in God or other aspects of religion. We need to know precisely what he is interpreting. Armed with this we can begin to engage the issue. Lacking this we do not know where to start.

Thank you.

As I just noted on my website, unfortunately statistics show a significant decline in trust also on Main St., the results of which will be become clear when there is a revived struggle for limited resources.

Music? Hasn't stopped just yet.

People believe that they can win in Casinos. Why?

This is quite an amazing piece, Arjun. Thank you for writing it. I like how against the view of Capitalism as the great secularizing, de-mystifying force to come out of the Enlightenment you juxtapose a quasi-religious reaction to it. I hear echos of Adorno in it.
