Alex de Waal has been awarded the honor of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the British New Year’s Honors list, “for services to development and conflict resolution.”

A young, NYC-based novelist, Nick McDonell, asked Alex (his former Harvard prof) if he could accompany him on his recent travels into Sudan.
